Wastewater Treatment

The City of Caro Wastewater Treatment Department is responsible for the safe and effective collection, treatment, and discharge of wastewater generated by homes, businesses, and industries within the City. This essential service protects public health, preserves the environment, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.

Through careful monitoring, maintenance, and operation of treatment facilities and collection systems, the department works behind the scenes every day to keep Caro clean, safe, and sustainable.

Services & Operations

The Wastewater Treatment Department manages:

  • Collection of wastewater through the City’s sewer system

  • Operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility

  • Monitoring and treatment of wastewater to meet regulatory standards

  • Management of biosolids and byproducts

  • Emergency response to system issues or failures

All operations are conducted in accordance with permits issued by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and applicable environmental regulations.

Environmental Protection

Protecting local waterways and natural resources is a top priority. Proper wastewater treatment helps prevent pollution, safeguard ecosystems, and support the long-term health of the community and surrounding environment.

Maintenance & Infrastructure

Regular inspections, system upgrades, and preventative maintenance help ensure reliable service and reduce the risk of disruptions. The City continually evaluates its infrastructure to meet current needs and plan for future growth.

Public Cooperation

Residents and businesses play an important role in maintaining the wastewater system. Proper disposal practices and prompt reporting of sewer issues help prevent backups, overflows, and damage to the system.

Services

The City of Caro area Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is located at 724 Columbia St. Our staff includes one full time Superintendent and four full time operators. Our hours are 7am to 4pm Monday through Friday with someone on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies. The responsibilities of the WWTP staff are to operate and maintain a 1.2 million gallon a day activated sludge plant, as well as 11 lift stations throughout Caro. We also maintain a free RV dump station at the plant.

What Not to Flush

Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. Flushing improper items can cause sewer backups, damage equipment, increase maintenance costs, and lead to environmental harm.

Please do not flush the following items:

  • Wipes of any kind (including “flushable” wipes)

  • Paper towels, tissues, napkins, or diapers

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Cotton swabs, dental floss, or hair

  • Grease, fats, or cooking oils

  • Medications or pharmaceuticals

  • Cigarette butts

  • Cat litter or pet waste

  • Food scraps

  • Plastics or other non-biodegradable materials

Proper Disposal Matters

Items that do not break down easily can clog sewer lines, damage pumps, and interfere with the wastewater treatment process. Proper disposal helps prevent costly repairs, service disruptions, and potential sewage overflows.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to dispose of household waste properly and follow recommended disposal guidelines. When in doubt, throw it in the trash, not the toilet.
